Launching a Crowdfunding Project to Inspire Oxford

Getting Women in Science

Somerville, in partnership with the Oxford Chemistry department, came to me with plans to establish a Dorothy Hodgkin Career Development Fellowship, to support an outstanding woman scientist at the beginning of her career, when there tends to be a marked drop-off of women in science research. It was aimed at women returning to research after a career break.

Crowdfunding the Way

We took the radical approach of launching a crowdfunding project to inspire and involve the Oxford science community, and women and men everywhere who care about the representation of women in science and want to make an immediate and concrete impact.

Momentum Building

Within that approach, we developed promotions for events and ambassador recruitment — as well as encouraged donations every step of the way with social media, podcasts, donation matching challenges and goal setting.

A True Team Project

A person in the development office at Somerville created line drawing videos outside of work so we asked her to create one to go with the story we wanted to tell (which also gave her a chance to bring more of her skills to the forefront).
